Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers

I aim to write about the medicines here as given in Materia Medica s, but would confine myself to only bite-size indications. Occasionally do I plan to provide a full meal😊. Most of what I would be posting here would be practical points that can be used in day-to-day practice.
How to perceive a patient’s symptoms and understand them in light of the language of Materia medica is what I plan to present. It will not be something out of the extraordinary but would be of importance, which is sometimes missed in the sea of symptoms in each medicine. I personally am very fond of a few authors and have been trying to follow them. They are Boenninghausen, Boger, Lippe, Pulford, Guernsey, Hering, Allen, Phatak, and the fountainhead Dr. Hahnemann, and most of what I plan to write would be from these. I would also try to give a reference for what I write. I still find myself learning every day and discovering new things; once a student always a student. I however wish to reduce this struggle for others.
Occasionally I will be sharing the drug picture for better understanding.

ARTEMISIA ABROTANUM

Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers
  • Suited to children
    • Great prostration, with a king of hectic fever, unable to stand
    • So weak that cannot hold their head up
    • Skin hangs in loose folds around neck
    • Marasmus while eating well
    • Marasmus starting in lower extremities, ascending
  • Irritable, cross, want to do something cruel
  • Depressed, violent
  • Little boys
    • Emaciated
    • Who have nosebleed
    • With hydrocele
  • Infant
    • Moisture/ blood oozing from the naval of new born
  • Great weakness after influenza
  • Rheumatism
    • Painful wrist and ankles before swelling commences
    • Alternated with haemorrhoids/piles
    • Alternating with diarrhoea
  • Checked/ suppressed diarrhoea precipitates and attack of rheumatism
  • Painful cramps in limbs after colic
  • Itching chilblain
  • Bloated abdomen
  • Vomiting of offensive fluid
  • Wet <
  • Exudations
    • Pleuricy, tubercular
    • Tuberculous peritonitis
    • In joints
  • Craves bread in boiled milk
  • Feels very tired from conversation, can’t work
  • Food passes undigested

MAGNESIUM PHOSPHORICUM

Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers
  • Always talking about her pains
  • Generally Thin dark and nervous females
  • Right sided affections
  • Pains
    • Sharp, cutting, cramping
    • Suddenly coming and going
    • Shifting pains
    • Pains unbearable, driving the patient to frenzy.
    • Neuralgic pains (toothache, facial neuralgia etc)

> heat, < touch

> Pains with swelling, chilliness and sweating

  • Very chilly
    • Great dread of cold water, bathing, washing
    • Great dread of cold air
  • Sensitive
    • To touch, dread of being touched
    • Dread of moving about, yet too restless to sit
  • Complaints from standing in cold water/ working with clay
  • Weak and tired, cannot sit
  • Dentition
    • Complaints of children during
    • Convulsions without fever
  • Headache
    • Of school girls
    • After mental exertion or hard study (a few doses of mag phos clears the mind and helps in thinking clearly)
    • From emotions
    • Starts in occiput and spreads to head

Aml pressure and external heat

  • Spasmodic affects
    • Colic

Severe, > bending double > heat

Makes the patient bend double with pain, restless and walking about and passing flatus

  • Spasmodic cough/ whooping cough

All complains of MAG PHOS are > heat except cough which is > by cool air

  • Spasmodic yawning as if jaw will dislocate with tears in eyes
    • Angina
    • Cramps

Writer’s cramps/ musicians cramps/ cramps after use of tools/ cramps during pregnancy

  • Thirst for very cold water
  • Diarrhoea ceases and spasms sets in
  • Menses
    • < before and > after menses. The establishment of flow ameliorates as in LACHESIS and ZINCUM
    • Menses at night
  • Enuresis
    • After catheterization
  • Sleeplessness after exhaustion
  • Taste of banana in mouth
  • Barber’s itch
  • Herpetic eruptions with white scales
  • One vertebra seems to be missing

(Think of a female who is nervous, exhausted; gets headache on thinking, she is having severe stomach colic and is bending double and moving about. She tells her complaints to anyone who is coming. All she talks about is her pains. Which are sometimes here, sometimes there, and they come and go suddenly. She wants warmth, any cold draft or working in cold water aggravates her. She uses hot water for household work. She complaints of cramps while playing her favourite musical instrument, can’t do it anymore.

The child has convulsions during dentition. He’s a restless baby.

The old catheterized himself to get relief of urinary troubles, though uncomfortable earlier, he has started experiencing severe pains after he started catheterization.)

ARTEMISIA VULGARIS

Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers
  • Convulsions
    • In childhood, during dentition
    • Girls at puberty
    • After fright, violent emotions, grief, bad news, masturbation, from blow on head
    • With irregular menses
    • Irritable before convulsion
    • Petit mal convulsions
    • Without aura
    • Convulsions come in quick succession and then there’s a long break
    • Spasms during menses
  • Sweat smells like garlic
    • During fever
    • After convulsion
  • Walking in street, the person suddenly stops, stares, mumbles and then becomes normal, not remembering anything
  • Mouth drawn to left
  • Coloured lights produce dizziness
  • Violent profuse and painful menses    
  • Right side convulses, left paralysed or vice versa
  • Nocturnal palpitation
  • Worms

(The convulsions of Artemisia are like many other drugs that produce convulsions, however the concomitant of garlic like smell of sweat helps distinguish this remedy from others.)

  • Kleptomania
  • Brutal
  • Convulsions
    • Trembling before convulsions
    • Do not remember anything before and after convulsion (pre and postictal amnesia)
    • Unconsciousness and biting of tongue during convulsion with foaming at mouth

TRIFOLIUM PRATENSE

  • Ptyalism (merc, syph)
  • Crusta lactae (milk crust)
  • Stiff neck- cramp in sternocleidomastoid > heat, > rubbing
  • Cancerous diathesis- prevents progress of cancer before ulceration sets in
  • Hay fever
    • Sore throat with coryza
    • Coryza with thin mucus
    • Cough at night, on coming to open air
    • Spasmodic cough/ whooping
  • Breathing stops when very warm with fever

(Compare medicines like JUSTICIA, ALLIUM CEPA etc. TRIFOLIUM PRATENSE however has stiff neck and ptyalism as additional and more characteristic features that individualizes this drug.)

BROMINE- a snapshot

  • Suited to people with light hair, skin and light eyes
  • Delusion that someone is looking over the shoulder
  • Respiratory complaints
    • Very sore and red throat
    • Diphtheria, ascending. Starting in trachea and making its way upwards
    • Rattling of mucus in larynx but no choking (choking- HEP SULPH)
    • Fan like motion of ala nasi

  • Complaints from getting chilled after being overheated, then becomes sensitive to even drafts of air
