Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers

I aim to write about the medicines here as given in Materia Medica s, but would confine myself to only bite-size indications. Occasionally do I plan to provide a full meal😊. Most of what I would be posting here would be practical points that can be used in day-to-day practice.
How to perceive a patient’s symptoms and understand them in light of the language of Materia medica is what I plan to present. It will not be something out of the extraordinary but would be of importance, which is sometimes missed in the sea of symptoms in each medicine. I personally am very fond of a few authors and have been trying to follow them. They are Boenninghausen, Boger, Lippe, Pulford, Guernsey, Hering, Allen, Phatak, and the fountainhead Dr. Hahnemann, and most of what I plan to write would be from these. I would also try to give a reference for what I write. I still find myself learning every day and discovering new things; once a student always a student. I however wish to reduce this struggle for others.
Occasionally I will be sharing the drug picture for better understanding.

Hope you find it helpful.

There’s tendency to acidity to most of things he eats, with sourness as generality of all discharges. The female is worn down by cares and worries, has menstrual troubles and suffers from toothaches. PTELEA TRIFOLIATA- a snapshot

  • A liver remedy very similar to Bryonia alba.
  • Pain, sore in liver > lying on rt side, < lying left side.
  • Severe gastric symptoms, burning, pain, emptiness
  • Cannot tolerate fat
  • Liver symptoms with (concomitants)

  • Eructation tasting like rotten eggs
  • Noises cause startling
  • Irritable
  • Burning everywhere- skin/ mouth/ stomach/ face etc.
  • Breath so hot that it burns the nostrils. (Tyler)
  • Asthma < lying on back
  • Headache with acidity
  • Excessive salivation. Prominent papillae on tongue.
  • Desire and general > from eating sour things.
  • Dreams of fighting.

(Clarke Dictionary of Materia Medica very beautifully explains the subtle differences between BRYONIA and PTELEA. Both are liver remedies with coated tongue, biliousness, irritable nature, > lying on rt side but BRYONIA has < least motion while PTELEA has < only on deep breathing.)

(With NUX VOMICA it can be differentiated by its bitter taste while NUX has sour taste. NUX has < 2-3 hrs after eating food while PTELEA is agg after food. PTELEA’s tenesmus in stools persists after stool while that of NUX VOM is aml after stools.)
