Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers

I aim to write about the medicines here as given in Materia Medica s, but would confine myself to only bite-size indications. Occasionally do I plan to provide a full meal😊. Most of what I would be posting here would be practical points that can be used in day-to-day practice.
How to perceive a patient’s symptoms and understand them in light of the language of Materia medica is what I plan to present. It will not be something out of the extraordinary but would be of importance, which is sometimes missed in the sea of symptoms in each medicine. I personally am very fond of a few authors and have been trying to follow them. They are Boenninghausen, Boger, Lippe, Pulford, Guernsey, Hering, Allen, Phatak, and the fountainhead Dr. Hahnemann, and most of what I plan to write would be from these. I would also try to give a reference for what I write. I still find myself learning every day and discovering new things; once a student always a student. I however wish to reduce this struggle for others.
Occasionally I will be sharing the drug picture for better understanding.

CYCLAMEN

Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers
  • Desire solitude
  • Silent weeping
  • Inward grief, not expressed
  • Terrors of conscience, of duty not done
  • Sad, morose
  • Desire to lie down
  • Apathy, indifference to such a degree that she stops answering questions and stools and urine are passed unconsciously
  • Very chilly, not even > by covers
  • < cold, > warmth and indoors
  • walking, as long as she walks, she feels better (except tiredness), complaints come on resting
  • Menses
    • Profuse and early
    • More when sitting > walking
  • Headache with visual disturbances, dim vision or with flickering before eyes.
  • Anaemic
  • Everything tastes salty
  • Prostatic troubles with urging for stools.
  • Anosmia

(Compare with PULS, who is also weepy except cyclamen is very chilly, is > indoors and warmth and has profuse menses as opposed to scanty periods of PULS)

(You will also think of FERR or CHINA when it is actually cyclamen)

  • Suited to those who have abused sexual powers
  • Apathy, sadness
  • H/o repeated gonorrhoea
  • Alternate self contempt with over exaltation
  • Impotence, complete loss of sexual desire
  • Tachycardia from tobacco chewing
  • Milk deficient in nursing mother with great sadness
  • Thinks he is going to die soon and repeats the same
  • Sensation of bowels pressing down, wants to support them with hands

  • Arrested development in children (Allen’s Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica)
  • Affects the veins, causes venous engorgement
  • Bursting sensation
  • < letting the part hang down > raising the part up
  • Nerves affected- polio
    • Multiple neuritis
  • Ascending paralysis
  • Peeling of skin in large patches
  • Epistaxis on nursing
  • Jaundice with enlarged liver and fever
  • Swollen and blue face and lips
  • Great thirst for cold water
  • Haematuria
  • Boils, gangrene, ulcer etc

VIOLA ODORATA- sanpshot

  • Intellectual faculties predominate the emotions
  • Frequent shedding of tears
  • Irritable, tall, thin, nervous
  • Disobedient
  • Weak memory
  • Headache, knit eyebrows from pain
  • Tension as generality
  • Eye ear kidney and worm symptoms combined.
  • Ear pain with eye pain
  • Recurrent otorrhoea in childhood
  • Enuresis with strong smelling urine
  • Fibroids
  • Rheumatic pains- sp right side of body, shoulder and wrist
  • Dry skin with moist palms
  • Craving for meat
  • Feeling of weight on chest

(In a first glance you might think of PULS or SILICEA for the patient. But keep viola odorata in mind when thinking of these remedies)

  • Violence.
  • Mistrustful.
  • Confounds present with past.
  • Bad effects of concussion to brain sp convulsions
  • Convulsions in children during dentition, from worms.
  • Opithotonus
  • < touch, noise
  • Convulsions- no memory. Does not know where he is, knows nothing but answers the questions.
  • Meningitis
  • Head symptoms > passing flatus.
  • Eyes- bad effects from exposure to snow.
  • Strabismus or spasm of eyes after an injury.
  • Bleeding from ears
  • Thick yellow crusted lesions sp on scalp face etc.
  • Desires coal, charcoal etc.
  • Very chilly, desires warmth.

  • Fat sluggish, large body with thin limbs
    • With respiratory complaints
  • Large buttocks
  • Acrid nasal catarrh, corroding the lip
  • Inflamed tonsils, enlarged painful lymph nodes
  • Dry cough agg night, burning in spot in chest, tenacious mucus
  • Rattling in chest
  • Cough with liver troubles
  • Cough as concomitant
  • Secretions glairy as concomitant.
  • Icy coldness between shoulders
  • Menses
    • Flow more at night
    • Diarrhoea before and during menses
    • Bleeding from rectum during menses
  • Leucorrhoea
    • Profuse like white of an egg
    • Profuse after urination with colic
    • Haemorrhoids from suppressed leucorrhoea
  • Stools
    • Hard and crumbling at verge of anus
    • No stools are alike
  • Smarting and burning piles, agg after stools
  • Tensive pains in limbs, muscles and tendons feel shortened, cannot walk straight
  • Pain in heels ulcerative severe pains, or ulcers on heels.
  • Urine passed more freely with stools
  • Morning stiffness of body > walking in open air

Head and chest symptoms < morning, abdomen < in afternoon and skin, limbs and fever < in the evening

AMMONIUM CARB- a snapshot

Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers
  • Weak lethargic stout females who are very chilly and have a tendency to take cold.
  • Desire to lie down all the time.
  • Aversion to bathing. Unclean body habits.
  • Haemorrhagic diathesis- fluid blood
  • Breathlessness
    • Agg ascending
    • Agg 3-4 am
    • Warm room, feels better in open air (like CARBO VEG)
  • Rattling in chest but nothing comes up. (compare ANT TART)
  • Weak heart
  • Nose always blocked. Snuffles of children. Sleeps with mouth open.
  • Loses breath on sleeping, wakes up gasping for breath. (compare GRINDELIA, LACHESIS)
  • Day sleepiness
  • Sore throat, swollen tonsils, with tendency to gangrenous ulceration
  • Cannot eat without drinking.
  • Very acrid discharges
    • Menses
    • leucorrhoea
    • Coryza etc.
  • Menses
    • Early profuse black clotted menses
    • Agg night
    • Diarrhoea before menses
    • Sadness during menses
    • Yawning and chilliness during menses
    • More when sitting
  • Scarlet fever
    • Body very red .
    • Faint eruptions.     
  • Becomes irritable in wet stormy weather.
  • Bones ache at every change of weather.
  • Bursting headache like BELL and GLONINE sp forehead
  • Nosebleed
    • In morning on waking
    • On washing face
    • After eating
    • On washing hands
  • Emphysema
  • Panaritium/ felon, deep seated pains as if in bones
  • Joint pains agg night, from heat of bed.
