Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers

I aim to write about the medicines here as given in Materia Medica s, but would confine myself to only bite-size indications. Occasionally do I plan to provide a full meal😊. Most of what I would be posting here would be practical points that can be used in day-to-day practice.
How to perceive a patient’s symptoms and understand them in light of the language of Materia medica is what I plan to present. It will not be something out of the extraordinary but would be of importance, which is sometimes missed in the sea of symptoms in each medicine. I personally am very fond of a few authors and have been trying to follow them. They are Boenninghausen, Boger, Lippe, Pulford, Guernsey, Hering, Allen, Phatak, and the fountainhead Dr. Hahnemann, and most of what I plan to write would be from these. I would also try to give a reference for what I write. I still find myself learning every day and discovering new things; once a student always a student. I however wish to reduce this struggle for others.
Occasionally I will be sharing the drug picture for better understanding.

ASAFOETIDA- a snapshot

  • A syphilitic hysterical medicine
  • Left sided
  • Suited to obese individuals.
  • Bones- painful caries- nose/shin etc
  • Ulcers
    • Hard ulcers with thin pus
  • Foulness/ offensiveness-stool/ urine
  • Purulence- green foetid pus
    • Ears, nose etc.
  • Indifferent yet excited
  • Changing mood
  • Globus, everything seems to press upwards towards the throat
  • Sudden severe paroxysmal pain.
    • Change place > touch
    • Boring pains/ clavus
    • Within outwards
    • With numbness
    • Headache > by stool
  • Fainting
    • Without cause
    • Closed room
    • Excitement from
    • Emission after
  • Explosive eructation
  • Turgid mammae with milk without pregnancy

RICCINUS COMMUNIS

(The symptoms given below are from poisoning and proving in cruder potencies)

  • Increases quantity of milk in nursing females.
  • Burning as a generality.
  • Anorexia with great thirst.
  • Great prostration
  • Severe diarrhoea and vomiting with chilliness and pain in extremities.
  • Fever. Somnolence.
  • Gangrene foot.

VALERIANA- a snapshot

  • Like PULS but intelligent

(Similarities with PULS

  • changeable disposition and symptoms
    • < evening
    • Sleepless sp in earlier part of night
    • Pains > motion sp sciatica
    • Late and scanty menses)
  • Full of ideas, very mobile and extreme ideas.
  • Illusions of smell/ hearing/ taste.
  • Tendency to faint.
  • Cramps/ jerks in stomach/ legs/ hands/ during sleep.
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting of curdles milk in infant after nursed by angry mother.
  • Heel pains.
  • Over sensitiveness. Want of reaction to well-chosen remedy.
  • Polyuria.
  • < evening or afternoon, every 2-3 months.

MOSCHUS- a snapshot

  • Girls who are self-willed, obstinate, selfish and crafty. Who Never learned obedience and always had their whims gratified.
  • Hysterical with imaginary symptoms.
  • Awkward, dropping things easily.
  • Fainting;
    • on eating,
    • during menses,
    • with heart complaints,
    • from pains etc.
  • Very chilly and sensitive to cold air. Cold air causes spasm of chest.
  • Palpitation > belching.
  • Complaints constantly, but do not know what ails them.
  • Vertigo with loss of speech but sees and understands everything.
  • Impotence from diabetes.
  • Diseases do not take normal course.

(One might think of VALERIANA as both (MOSCHUS and VALERIANA are hysterical remedies.

Comes very close to VALERIANA, however, VALERIANA has scanty menses, and MOSCH does not have the changeability of VALERIANA.)

  • Liver complaints with urticaria.
  • Very red eyelids.
  • Jaundice.
  • Mucus- tenacious- anywhere- mouth, throat, stool. (Boger Synoptic key)
  • Sleeplessness
  • Gloomy
  • Constant discharge of flatus while walking.
  • Slow pulse
  • Creeping sensation on skin.

Hamamelis

  • Varicosity- throat/ abdomen/ legs/ genitals etc.
  • Bursting sensation.
  • Haemorrhage- from all parts- hemoptysis, haematemesis, haematuria, varicose ulcers, bleeding gums, epistaxis, bleeding ears etc- passive oozing blood.
  • Soreness and bruised feeling of affected part.
  • Weariness and weakness.
  • Orchitis.                              
  • Intraocular haemorrhage from severe bouts of cough.
  • Varicose veins during pregnancy.
