Materia medica/ knowledge of medicinal powers

I aim to write about the medicines here as given in Materia Medica s, but would confine myself to only bite-size indications. Occasionally do I plan to provide a full meal😊. Most of what I would be posting here would be practical points that can be used in day-to-day practice.
How to perceive a patient’s symptoms and understand them in light of the language of Materia medica is what I plan to present. It will not be something out of the extraordinary but would be of importance, which is sometimes missed in the sea of symptoms in each medicine. I personally am very fond of a few authors and have been trying to follow them. They are Boenninghausen, Boger, Lippe, Pulford, Guernsey, Hering, Allen, Phatak, and the fountainhead Dr. Hahnemann, and most of what I plan to write would be from these. I would also try to give a reference for what I write. I still find myself learning every day and discovering new things; once a student always a student. I however wish to reduce this struggle for others.
Occasionally I will be sharing the drug picture for better understanding.

SCROPHULARIA NODOSA

  • Despondency, much troubled about past, apprehensive about future
  • Miserable and sluggish feeling in mind while moving
  • Complaints from vexation
  • Tingling in extremities from blow on a nerve
  • Enlarged glands
    • Mammae nodosities (SCHIRRHINUM)
    • Scrofulous swellings (CISTUS CAN)
  • Hodgkins’s disease
  • Ear
    • Eczema of ear
    • Inflammation about auricles
    • Deep ulcerated auricles
  • Pruritic vaginae
  • Crusta lactae
  • Threatened abscess showing no sign of healing
  • Haemorrhoids
    • Painful and bleeding
  • Tubercular testis
  • Epithelioma
  • Pain in flexor muscles
  • Deafness in a bull necked person
  • Pain in joint < rest > warmth (compare rhus tox- scrop Has more intense pains)
  • Pain in head from forehead to back
  • Vertigo felt in vertex
  • Eyes
    • Distressing photophobia (conium)
    • Spots before eyes
    • Sore eyeballs
    • Stitches in eyebrows
  • Weakness
    • Too weak to speak
    • Wants to lie down
  • Pain in liver
  • Colic below naval
  • Pain in sigmoid flexure and rectum. Severe painful condition with purulent discharge
  • Violent dyspnoea, oppression of chest
  • Asthma in scrofulous person
  • Pain in bifurcation of trachea
  • Skin pricking at back of hand
    • Between fingers
    • Inside wrist
  • Great drowsiness
    • In morning
    • Before and after meals
  • < lying on rt side
  • Sensation of soft body in throat
  • Stiff neck contraction of sternocleidomastoid muscle
  • Pemphigus gangrenosum
  • Local application
    • For hair fall
    • Spindle cell epithelioma of inside of lip

A very important remedy with action on female organs.

  • Emmenagogue in physiological doses
  • Tall blood less patients with nervous chills (compare PHOS)
  • Pains extend above downwards
  • Uneasy, anxious with sighing
  • Sterility
  • Uterus
    • Fibroids, sub-involution
    • Retained placenta
    • Disturbed uterine function, feels the menses will start but doesn’t
    • Tardy menses
    • Watery menses
    • Bearing down pains
    • Intermittent pains in ovaries
    • Sympathetic pains in heart stomach bowel arising in uterus
  • Tumors of breast with swelling of axillary glands
  • Anorexia with uneasy feeling at stomach at the time of menses
  • Nausea and vomiting
    • Severe morning sickness
      • With sensitive uterine region
    • < on rising
    • Agg motion
  • Pain in cervical region, draws head back with nervousness
  • Taste like rotten eggs
  • Great sleepiness

A very good medicine in syphilis after mercury has been given and cannot be given anymore

  • Heals ulcers and remove blotches

Anaemia of syphilis

Heat in stomach

Obesity

Flesh will increase fat will decrease

Enormous thickening of ends of all nails

Extremities

  • Pain in foot so severe so as to cause pain in the eye > coffee
  • Swelling of knees
  • Soreness redness and pain in thigh
  • Stiffness and inability to work
  • Pain in hands and feet first left then right

Pain in foot agg by putting foot on the floor, if however it is done slowly then weight can be borne eventually.

    • Crawling in nape of neck, rising upward towards head
    • Headache during pregnancy
    • Agg < wine, weight of hat, jar, motion, stooping, ascending
    • Amel > long sleep, cool air, passing stool
  • Menses
    • Suppression of menses causes head congestion and headache
    • Diarrhoea from sudden cessation of menses
  • Heart
    • Headache synchronous with the pulse
    • Purring in the region of the heart
    • Severe palpitation at the heart after fear/ fright
  • Sunstroke
    • Body feels numb
  • Sciatica > flexing leg on abdomen
  • Convulsion of children during dentition
  • Flushes of heat
    • Menses during (FERR MET, SANG CAN)
  • Old scars break out again
  • Vertigo on getting up from chair or trying to sit in upright posture

    • Pulsating pains
    • Toothache and headache
  • Wants to loosen up collar

  • Sore feet of shop girls
  • Small red spots all over body
  • Aggravation
    • Inspiration

    • Wrapping up warmly

(This remedy comes close to ARSENIC in anxiety, coryza amel from warmth and thirst for small quantity frequently, with SOLIDAGO like features like involvement of respiratory and urinary system.)
